Crochet Sunburst Granny Square

Granny squares are a time held tradition in crochet. I know I’m not the first person to come up with a sunburst style design, but here is my personal technique for those interested in trying it out.

Materials:
• Worsted Weight Yarn
• Size US I9/5.50 MM Crochet Hook
• Scissors
• Tapestry Needle

 

Special Stitches: Puff
To create a puff for this pattern… *Yo once. Insert hook into indicated sp and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook). Rep from * 3 more times in the same sp (9 loops on hook). Yo and pull yarn through all 9 loops on hook.

 

Pattern:

Beg:
• Leaving a small yarn tail, create a slip knot, ch-5, and join to first ch with a sl-st to form a ring.

Round 1:
• Ch-1.
• Into ring, hdc 16 times around.
• 1 sl-st in top of first hdc to join rnd.

Round 2:
• 1 hdc in top of same st ending sl-st from last rnd was made in. Ch-1.
• (1 hdc in top of next st, ch-1) 15 times around.
• 1 sl-st in first ch-sp to join rnd.

Round 3:
• (Puff, ch-2) once in each ch-sp around.
• 1 sl-st in first ch-sp to join rnd.

Round 4:
• Ch-2.
• dc3tog (and include first ch-2) in first ch-sp. Ch-3.
• (dc4tog, ch-3) once in each remaining ch-sp around.
• 1 sl-st in first ch-sp to join rnd.

Round 5:
• Ch-3.
• tr4tog (and include first ch-3) in first ch-sp. Ch-4.
• (tr5tog, ch-4) once in each remaining ch-sp around.
(start second color if desired)
• 1 sl-st in first ch-sp to join rnd.

Round 6:
• (Ch-3, 3 tr, ch-3, 4 tr) once in first ch-sp.
• *(3 dc, 2 hdc) in next ch-sp. 4 sc in next ch-sp. (2 hdc, 3 dc) in next ch-sp. (4 tr, ch-3, 4 tr) in next ch-sp. Rep from * to end of rnd, but sk the last (4 tr, ch-3, 4 tr).
• 1 sl-st in top of first ch-3 to join rnd.

Round 7:
• Ch-2.
• 1 dc in top of each st and (3 dc, ch-3, 3 dc) once in each corner ch-sp around.
(start third color if desired)
• 1 sl-st in top of first ch-2 to join rnd.

Round 8:
• Ch-1.
• 1 sc in top of same st ending sl-st from last rnd was made in.
• 1 sc in top of each of the next 6 sts. 4 sc in next corner ch-sp.
• *1 sc in top of each of the next 13 sts. Dec next 2 sts tog. 1 sc in top of each of the next 13 sts. 4 sc in next corner ch-sp. Rep from * twice.
• *1 sc in top of each of the next 13 sts. Dec next 2 sts tog. 1 sc in top of each of the next 6 sts.
• 1 sl-st in top of first st to join rnd.

Round 9:
• Ch-2.
• dc3tog (and include first ch-2) in top of same st ending sl-st from last rnd was made in. Ch-1.
• *Sk next st, (dc4tog, ch-1) once in top of next st. Rep from * twice. Sk next st, dc4tog in top of next st, ch-3, dc4tog in top of next st.
• **(*Sk next st, (dc4tog, ch-1) once in top of next st. Rep from * 13 more times. Sk next st, dc4tog in top of next st, ch-3, dc4tog in top of next st.) Rep from ** twice.
• *Sk next st, (dc4tog, ch-1) once in top of next st. Rep from * 9 more times.
• Ch-1. 1 sl-st in front of first cluster to join rnd.

Round 10:
• (Puff, ch-1) once between each cluster and (puff, ch-3, puff) once in each corner ch-sp around.
• Ch-2 after last puff then 1 sl-st in front of first puff to join rnd.

Round 11:
• Ch-1.
• 2 sc between each puff and 5 sc in each corner ch-sp around.
• 1 sl-st in top of first st to join rnd.
• Cut yarn with scissors and fasten off yarn tail and any other loose ends with tapestry needle. Finished square measures about 10”.
