I’ll try to update this page as new terms come up. Here is a current list of crochet abbreviations as they pertain to my patterns and what they mean:

Abbreviations:
( ) = work instructions within parentheses as many times as directed

blo – back loop only
ch(s) = chain(s)
dc = double crochet
dc#tog = double crochet {given number} together
dec = decrease
flo = front loop only
hdc = half double crochet
inc = increase
rep = repeat
rnd = round
sc = single crochet
sk = skip
sl-sl = slip-stitch
sp(s) = space(s)
st(s) = stitch(s)
tr = triple crochet
tr#tog = triple crochet {given number} together
yo = yarn over – term used to describe when you wrap the yarn around your hook

Detailed Descriptions:

Blo – Back loop only. To work in blo, instead of inserting your hook into both loops of a st, insert your hook into the loop furthest from you (the outside loop).

Ch – Chain. To create a ch, start by making a slip knot. Insert hook into slip knot and draw up a loop from the working yarn end (NOT the tail end). Ch made. Continue drawing up loops until you have your desired number of chs.

Dc – Double crochet. To create a dc… Yo once. Insert hook into indicated sp and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yo and pull yarn through two of the loops (2 loops left on hook). Yo again and pull yarn through the two remaining loops.

Flo – Front loop only. To work in flo, instead of inserting your hook into both loops of a st, insert your hook into the loop closest to you (the inside loop).

Hdc – Half-double crochet. To create a hdc… Yo once. Insert hook into indicated sp and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yo and pull yarn though the three loops.

Sc – Single crochet. To create a sc… Insert hook into indicated sp and draw up a loop (2 loops on hook). Yo and pull yarn through the two loops.

Sl-st – Slip stitch. To create a sl-st… Insert hook into indicated sp and draw up yarn through the only loop on your hook.

Tr – Triple crochet. To create a tr… Yo twice. Insert hook into indicated sp and draw up a loop (4 loops on hook). Yo and pull yarn through two of the loops (3 loops left on hook). Yo again and pull yarn through two more loops (2 loops left on hook). Yo again and pull yarn through the two remaining loops.
